February is Black History Month—a time to honor and reflect on the rich history, culture, and contributions of Black Americans. The History of Black History Month
Black History Month’s roots trace back to 1915, a half-century after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the United States. In September of that year, historian Carter G. Woodson and minister Jesse E. Moorland established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and celebrating the achievements of Black Americans and people of African descent.
In 1926, ASNLH launched the first Negro History Week during the second week of February to align with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. This event spurred schools and communities to organize celebrations, create history clubs, and host performances and lectures. By the late 1960s, the civil rights movement and a growing awareness of Black identity expanded the celebration to a month-long observance, especially on college campuses. In 1976 President Gerald Ford officially recognized February as Black History Month, urging Americans to “honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans.” Every sitting president has since continued this recognition.
How to Celebrate Black History Month in the Workplace:

1. Educate Your Team
Education is a vital first step in understanding the significance of Black History Month. Create opportunities for learning through:
- Hosting book clubs or movie nights featuring Black authors and filmmakers.
- Inviting guest speakers or organizing panel discussions.
- Sharing daily or weekly educational content, such as facts, articles, or videos.
