February is Black History Month—a time to honor and reflect on the rich history, culture, and contributions of Black Americans. This month presents an opportunity to celebrate in impactful ways while fostering a culture that values equity, and inclusion. A meaningful celebration starts with engaging your team and inviting everyone to participate in Black History Month initiatives.
The History of Black History Month
Black History Month’s roots trace back to 1915, a half-century after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the United States. In September of that year, historian Carter G. Woodson and minister Jesse E. Moorland established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and celebrating the achievements of Black Americans and people of African descent.
In 1926, ASNLH launched the first Negro History Week during the second week of February to align with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. This event spurred schools and communities to organize celebrations, create history clubs, and host performances and lectures. By the late 1960s, the civil rights movement and a growing awareness of Black identity expanded the celebration to a month-long observance, especially on college campuses. In 1976 President Gerald Ford officially recognized February as Black History Month, urging Americans to “honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans.” Every sitting president has since continued this recognition.
How to Celebrate Black History Month in the Workplace:
Here are some fun and meaningful ways to celebrate Black History Month while fostering an inclusive workplace culture:
1. Educate Your Team
Education is a vital first step in understanding the significance of Black History Month. Create opportunities for learning through:
- Hosting book clubs or movie nights featuring Black authors and filmmakers.
- Inviting guest speakers or organizing panel discussions.
- Sharing daily or weekly educational content, such as facts, articles, or videos.
Encouraging employees to learn from diverse perspectives can build awareness, empathy, and a stronger commitment to inclusion.
2. Support Black-Owned Businesses and Organizations
Promote economic equity by supporting Black-owned businesses and non-profits:
- Share directories like WeBuyBlack to help employees discover and support Black-owned businesses.
- Highlight and celebrate Black-owned businesses in your community through social media or internal newsletters.
- Organize team volunteer opportunities with Black-led non-profits or community initiatives.
Supporting these organizations is a great way to amplify their visibility and impact.
3. Celebrate Through Your Work
Show your commitment to inclusion by embedding diversity into your workplace practices:
- Create recognition programs to highlight contributions from diverse team members.
- Evaluate leadership representation and consider ways to diversify perspectives at all levels.
By demonstrating inclusivity as a core value, you can foster trust and belonging among your team.
4. Make It a Team Effort
Black History Month should be an inclusive celebration involving employees of all backgrounds. To ensure meaningful participation:
- Encourage everyone to get involved in planning and activities.
- Avoid placing the burden of organizing events solely on your Black employees.
- Create a safe and open space for dialogue, allowing employees to share ideas, reflections, and experiences.
A truly inclusive celebration values the contributions of every team member while honoring the significance of Black History Month.
Looking Beyond February
While Black History Month offers a focused opportunity for recognition and celebration, the commitment to diversity and inclusion can extend beyond February. Integrate these values into your organization’s year-round practices to ensure lasting impact. Celebrate, learn, and enjoy this Black History Month by engaging your team, supporting your community, and honoring the contributions that have shaped our history and culture!
