Navigating Power Dynamics Between C-Suite Leader & Individual Contributor

SITUATION:

A conflict between a C-suite executive and an individual contributor created disruption beyond their immediate working relationship. The significant hierarchical gap introduced concerns around psychological safety, perceived retaliation, and communication breakdowns—ultimately impacting team trust and cross-functional collaboration.

SOLUTION:

Exude Human Capital led a high-stakes mediation engagement focused on balancing power dynamics while maintaining respect for organizational structure. We began with confidential intake sessions to understand each party’s perspective, followed by a facilitated mediation with clearly defined rules of engagement.

Key areas of focus included:

  • Navigating positional authority versus interpersonal impact
  • Distinguishing intent versus impact in leadership communication
  • Creating space for safe, constructive upward feedback

Based on these insights, Exude HC designed and implemented a forward-focused action plan that established clear communication boundaries and expectations for both parties. The engagement also included executive coaching for the C-suite leader, with a focus on leadership presence, tone, and the broader impact of their behaviors across the organization.

To ensure accountability and sustained progress, we implemented structured follow-ups at two- and four-week intervals to assess progress and recalibrate as needed. Senior leadership was aligned throughout the process to reinforce expectations while preserving organizational hierarchy.

RESULTS:

The engagement restored a functional and productive working relationship, supported by clear communication norms and mutual understanding. Organizational ripple effects—such as team disengagement and hesitation in decision-making—were significantly reduced.

The C-suite leader gained increased awareness of their impact across multiple levels of the organization, strengthening overall leadership effectiveness.
